A close game turned into a big win that turned a championship. Other than the rain and a somewhat wild first quarter, it was a great Senior Day for the Princeton men's lacrosse team.

The Tigers broke open a close game in the second quarter en route to a 17-9 win over Dartmouth in front of 1,132 on a rainy day on Sherrerd Field. The win completed an 11-2 regular season that included a 5-1 record in the Ivy League, which ties Cornell for the championship.

The story of the game was face-offs, where Princeton won the first 15 of the day and where Andrew McMeekin went 19 for 21 with 15 groundballs.

The Ivy tournament matchups were set before the Princeton-Dartmouth game, with Cornell's win over Harvard and Yale's win over Brown in the early games Saturday. Princeton will be the No. 2 seed and will take on No. 3 Yale in Friday's second semifinal at Cornell, who will take on Harvard in the opening semifinal.

With the tournament matchups set, Princeton still had a lot to play for against the Big Green. In fact, the Tigers needed a win to get a championship for the first time since 2015, despite the two Ivy League tournament titles in the last three years.

The day began with a Senior Day ceremony for the 13 Tiger seniors. The game began with two quick Dartmouth goals, and Dartmouth went up 5-4 on a goal with 13 seconds remaining in those first 15 minutes. To that point, Princeton had outshot Dartmouth 15-7, had won all nine face-offs and had a 17-5 edge in groundballs — and still trailed.

That didn't last. McMeekin won the face-off after that fifth Dartmouth goal and found Nate Kabiri, who fed Chad Palumbo for a beat-the-clock goal with 0.4 seconds on the clock, tying it at 5-5.

Princeton then scored the first four goals of the second quarter, built a 10-6 halftime lead and sprinted away to a 17-7 lead five minutes into the fourth.

Palumbo finished with four goals and three assists, giving him 30 goals and 20 assists for the season. Kabiri finished with three goals and three assists, and nine other Tigers had at least a goal or assist.
