Princeton Announces 2019 Women's Lacrosse Schedule
August 29, 2018 | Women's Lacrosse
2019 Schedule
A spring break trip to Florida to face a first-time opponent, the first regular-season meeting with another national power, the annual meetings with several familiar faces and the always rugged Ivy League highlight a 15-game schedule for the Princeton women's lacrosse team for the 2019 season.
Â
"We're really excited about our 2019 schedule," Princeton head coach Chris Sailer said. "Our program's been known for playing a tough schedule year in and year out, and with the addition of two top-10 teams in Stony Brook and Florida in 2019, this will be our most competitive schedule in recent memory. We believe you've got to play the best to become your best, and this schedule reflects that belief. With teams like the two above plus traditional powerhouses Maryland, Loyola, Penn State and Virginia and the always tough Ivy League opponents, we're sure to be challenged early and often in 2019. We're hoping that experience will help us elevate our team to new levels this season."
Â
As usual, the schedule is filled with teams who can usually be found in the top 10 of Division I. This time, in addition to the Marylands and Penn States, Princeton will also be making a trip to Florida to take on the Gators, who like Princeton is a preseason Top 5 team, and will host Stony Brook, who was unbeaten last year into the NCAA quarterfinals.
Â
Princeton has never played Florida and has played Stony Brook only once before, an 8-4 win in the 2015 NCAA second round.
Â
The schedule features eight home games and seven road games, and the season begins on Sherrerd Field at Class of 1952 Stadium on Feb. 16 against Temple. By the end of the month, Princeton will have also traveled to Virginia and hosted Penn State.
Â
The Ivy League opener is March 2 at home against Columbia, and then Stony Brook comes to Princeton the following Saturday. There is a 10-day break after that game until the following Tuesday, March 19, when Princeton will be at Florida. If the US Lacrosse Magazine way-too-early preseason rankings for 2019 hold form, that would be No. 5 Princeton against No. 4 Florida.
Â
Of course it wouldn't be a Princeton women's lacrosse season without a game against Maryland, who are ranked second in the same preseason poll. Princeton will be at Maryland on Wednesday, March 27, after hosting Brown on the Saturday after the Florida game.
Â
Princeton and Maryland have met at least once every season since 1993.
Â
Villanova returns to the schedule for the third time, after the teams played in 2012 and 2013, both Princeton wins. That game will be in Princeton on April 2, followed by a trip to Harvard and then a midweek home game against Loyola.
Â
After that it's four Ivy games in 15 days, including three on the road, as the Tigers host Harvard and then travel to Penn, Yale and Cornell.Â
