No. 2 UNC Earns 1-0 Victory Over No. 10 Princeton
August 31, 2018 | Field Hockey
PHILADELPHIA – No. 2 North Carolina's Megan DuVernois' tipped goal with five minutes to go proved to be the game-winner as the Tar Heels earned a hard fought 1-0 victory over the No. 10 Princeton Tigers at Ellen Vagelos Field on Friday afternoon.
The Tigers earned their first corner of the season 10 minutes into the non-conference affair, but Maddie Bacskai's shot was deflected away. Sophia Tornetta tried another attempt, but it was just wide of the mark.
Grace Baylis registered her first save in impressive fashion in the 15th minute. Along the right side of the circle, the goalie made a sprawling stop to her left, keeping the score tied at zero. Baylis came up with another stoppage as there was a lot of commotion in front of the cage with eight minutes left.
As the wind started to pick up and a minute remained, the Tigers secured a corner. On the set piece, Hannah Davey's attempt was off the mark without a deflection in front of the cage, sending the two teams into the intermission tied at zero.
North Carolina began the second half with consecutive corners, but Baylis posted another save on the first attempt while the second corner didn't register a shot. In the 47th minute, Emma Street's fancy stick work led to a corner for the Tigers. Nicole Catalino found the bouncing ball and knocked into the cage, but the referee waved the tally off because it hit the back of the stick.
The Tigers put together another threat as Julianna Tornetta made a defender fall over with an impressive stick move, but her shot was wide. Princeton snagged two corners, but Sophia Tornetta's diving shot was stopped by the North Carolina goalie.
DuVernois' tally came with 5:11 to go in the game. After a long ball from the left side of the circle, Sumfest deflected the ball high over Baylis' shoulder. Princeton couldn't register one final rally, giving the Tar Heels their third victory of the season. The Tigers fell to 0-1 on the season. Head coach Carla Tagliente's team will take on the No. 14 Wake Forest Demon Deacons on Sunday (11 a.m.).
