Walker, Sowers Named 2019 Captains
September 06, 2018 | Men's Lacrosse
Strib Walker, a senior two-way middie, and Michael Sowers, a junior attackman, have been named the captains of the 2019 Princeton men's lacrosse team, head coach Matt Madalon announced.
Walker battled injuries his first two years before playing in every game last year as both an offensive midfielder and a shortstick defensive midfielder. Sowers led Division I in points per game and assists per game a year ago, and his 6.38 points per game were the most by a Division I player in 37 years.
"Being a captain at Princeton is a special honor," Madalon said. "Strib and Michael are joining a long line of great players and great leaders who have been captains throughout the history of Princeton lacrosse, and I have every faith that they will do a tremendous job in this role. We're so excited about this coming season, with the new rules and with the schedule we've put together, and I am very confident that we have the right two young men to lead us on the field and off the field."
Walker played in eight games as a freshman and just two as a sophomore, but he was healthy for the entire season last year. With changes to the rules that include a shot clock and a shortened substitution box, midfielders like Walker who can play on both ends of the field figure to be at a premium.
As for Sowers, his first two years have seen him break and then break again the Princeton records for points in a season, first with 82 as a freshman and then 83 a year ago. Sowers enters his junior year already 10th all-time at Princeton in points with 165 and fifth all-time at Princeton in assists with 97, and his 56 assists last year were the school record.
Princeton announced its 2019 schedule last week, which can be seen HERE. Upcoming announcements will include the new volunteer assistant coach and the Class of 2022.
