O'Connell Powers Princeton To Comeback Over Host To End Day 1 Of Towson Invitational
September 06, 2018 | Women's Volleyball
WEEKEND LINKS
Live Stats: Missouri l Ohio State
Live Video: Missouri l Ohio State
The reigning Ivy League Player of the Year had no interest in seeing her team finish Day 1 of the Towson Invitational without a victory, so Maggie O'Connell took over the Thursday nightcap.
O'Connell led Princeton with 21 kills and hit .357 to lead the Tigers to a 3-2 comeback win over Towson to finish a 1-1 opening day in Maryland. Princeton, which dropped a 3-2 opener to Long Beach State, will face a pair of teams that reached Sweet 16s over the last two years, Missouri (11:30 am) and Ohio State (4 pm).
While O'Connell was a familiar face leading the Princeton offense, a less known player also had a major impact in the match. Sophomore middle Clare Lenihan, who had 13 kills in the opener against Long Beach State, recorded 15 kills, seven digs, and three blocks, and she hit .483 in the win. All-Ivy junior Devon Peterkin continued the brilliant start to her season with a pair of double-doubles; she had 18 kills and 14 digs against LBSU, and she followed with 11 kills and 14 digs against Towson.
After taking the fourth set to even the match at 2-2, Princeton raced out in the fifth set to a 5-0 lead; O'Connell had three kills during that opening run, while Peterkin added an ace. A final kill by O'Connell secured the Tigers' fourth win of the season.
Also, "Beyond The Stripes" featured Nnenna Ibe in today's episode. Check it out below.
