Princeton Announces 2020 Women's Lacrosse Schedule
October 14, 2019 | Women's Lacrosse
The Princeton women's lacrosse team has put together a very challenging schedule for the 2020 season, which, of course, is nothing unique to the program.
The Tigers, who have won six straight Ivy League championships and who are coming off an NCAA quarterfinal run last season, will play seven teams from the 2019 NCAA tournament, not to mention an eighth team that had been to the seven previous NCAAs.
"We always want to challenge ourselves," says Princeton head coach Chris Sailer, who will be entering her 34th season as head coach. "We always want to play the best teams we can. Our goal is always to play deep into May, and having a tough schedule all season definitely helps you achieve that. We're working hard in our fall season now, but we're already excited about 2020."
Princeton's schedule includes defending NCAA champion Maryland, keeping alive an annual rivalry since 1993. There will also be a game against NCAA quarterfinalist Virginia and non-league games against NCAA participants Stony Brook, Florida and, for the first time, Jacksonville. Penn State is also on the schedule; the Nittany Lions did not reach the 2019 NCAA tournament but played in seven straight prior to that and have played in 24 overall.
The season begins for the fourth straight year against Temple, on Feb. 15. It also starts on the road, which is something the Tigers will get used to quickly, since six of the first seven are away from Sherrerd Field at Class of 1952 Stadium. The second game is the home opener, as UVa comes to Princeton, but there are five straight away games after that, at Villanova, Columbia, Stony Brook, Jacksonville (over spring break) and Brown.
Princeton will return home to take on Florida in the second meeting between the teams, after last year's game in Gainesville that Princeton won 13-11. Then it's out to Penn State before finishing the season with Maryland and five more Ivy games. Of those last six games, five will be at home, with the lone exception a trip to Harvard.
Princeton was one of three Ivy teams in the NCAA tournament last year, along with Penn and Dartmouth.
The 2019 season saw Princeton go 16-4 and win 11 straight before a loss to Boston College in the NCAA quarterfinals. The Tigers won the Ivy League regular season and tournament championships.
Princeton returns its leading goal scorer, Tess D'Orsi, who scored 64, and leading point scorer Kyla Sears, who had 55-goal, 40-assist season for 95 points. The Tigers also bring back All-America goalie Sam Fish and three starters on defense - Marge Donovan, Mary Murphy and Oliva Pugh.
The Tigers play their final fall games this weekend at Loyola, where they will take on the host team, Richmond and Florida, beginning at 11.
