Princeton Splits During Day One Of West Coast Trip, Defeats No. 11 LMU

SAN JOSE, Calif. – The Princeton Tigers secured a split during the first day of its West Coast trip with a 7-6 loss to the No. 13 San Jose State Spartans and 14-12 victory over the No. 11 Loyola Marymount Lions at the Spartan Recreation and Aquatic Center on Saturday.
No. 13 San Jose State 7, Princeton 6
After Pierce Maloney registered the first goal of the contest, San Jose State recorded three of the next four and took a 3-2 advantage after eight minutes. Neither team scored in the second stanza.
The Spartans started off the second half with two goals as they expanded their advantage before a strike from Casey Conrad with 4:59 remaining in the quarter. Two more tallies before the conclusion of the stanza gave the home unit a 7-3 lead after 24 minutes. Princeton scored twice over the final 1:14 of action, but fell short against San Jose State.

The first quarter featured a furious pace with eight combined goals between the two squads. After the Lions took a 2-1 lead, the Tigers posted four of the final five tallies and held a 5-3 lead after eight minutes.
Loyola Marymount snagged the first two tallies of the second frame, evening the game at 5-all. Alec Mendelsohn and Pierce Maloney put the Tigers in front, 8-6, at the intermission.
After Maloney opened up the second half scoring, Loyola Marymount ran off three straight and tied the matchup at 9-all with 2:45 to go in the stanza. Princeton and Loyola Marymount exchanged rallies, settling the score at 11-all with eight minutes left.
The Lions took a lead just 1:08 into the frame, but were held off the scoreboard the rest of the way. Keller Maloney, Mendelsohn, and Joan Coloma all scored as Princeton collected a 14-12 decision.
Pierce Maloney scored a team-best five goals in the victory. Princeton wraps up the trip tomorrow vs. Ottawa (3 p.m. ET, 12 p.m. PT) and Santa Clara (7 p.m. ET, 4 p.m. PT).
