Morning after morning, session after session, lap after lap, dive after dive … the Princeton women's swimming and diving team has gone through the daily grind for the opportunity that presents itself this weekend — put together your best weekend at the facility that means more to you than anybody else.
DeNunzio Pool will serve as the host for the 2019 Ivy League Championships, which take place from Wednesday through Saturday of this week. While the Wednesday evening session will include only the 200 medley and 800 free relays, the final three days will include preliminary sessions at 11 am and finals sessions at 6 pm. The full schedule, which includes times all diving events, can be found above.
Princeton, which has placed third in the Ivy Championships in each of the last three years, enters the weekend with several strong individual and relay contenders. Here is a quick breakdown by day of some Princetonians to watch, along with a couple other notes:
Wednesday
• Princeton has the top-ranked 200 medley relay coming into the Ivies (1:41.13)
• last year, Princeton broke program records in both the 200 medley and 800 free relays; both placed second in their finals
Thursday
• senior tri-captains Joanna Curry (4th, 2:01.00) and Izzy Reis (6th, 2:01.19) are both contenders for big points in the 200 IM; Reis could also factor in the 50 free (23.31), along with freshman teammate Cathy Teng (23.37)
• three divers are ranked in the top seven on the 1-meter board (prelims are held Thursday); junior Mimi Lin has the third-highest score in the league (283.80), while sophomore Sophia Peifer is fifth (282.98) and junior tri-captain Katrin Lewis is seventh (280.12)
Friday
• sophomore Regan Barney is the reigning Ivy League champion in the 400 IM, and she brings the best Ivy time into the event this week (4:14.69); her closest competition could come from Curry, who is second in the field in 4:15.27; nobody else is within 1.4 seconds of Curry
• junior Elaine Zhou has the fourth-fastest 100 fly time this season (54.41); Reis in only .01 of Zhou's time in the event to place herself in the top five
• both freshman Vivian Wang (1:03.10) and junior Christie Chong (1:03.29) have top-ten times in the 100 breast
Saturday
• sophomore Stephanie Nelson swims her best event on the final day; she enters the weekend with the second-fastest Ivy time (1:57.88) in the 200 back; Chong is right behind her with the third-fastest time of 1:58.82
• Teng is the Princeton leader in the 100 free; her time of 50.45 is the ninth-fastest in the league currently
• Curry is the reigning Ivy champion in the 200 fly, and she currently has the sixth-fastest Ivy time (1:59.83); Zhou comes in with the fifth-fastest time of 1:59.71
• Princeton has half of the top eight in the 3-meter diving field currently, with junior Natasha MacManus (318.00) leading the way at third overall; Peifer has the fifth-highest score (307.35), while classmate Sine Scribbick (307.20) is sixth and senior Carolyn MacFarlane (297.68) is eighth
