Princeton Claims Two Relays In Final Tuneup Before Hosting Ivy League Championships
February 02, 2019 | Women's Swimming and Diving
COMPLETE RESULTS
The Princeton women's swimming and diving team both opened and closed HYP weekend with dominant relay victories, but those wouldn't be enough to grab team wins over either of its most historic rivals inside Blodgett Pool. In the final tuneup for the Ivy League Championships, Princeton fell 186-114 to Yale and 182-118 to Harvard.
Yale won the overall weekend with a 182.50-117.50 victory over Harvard that clinches a perfect Ivy League record for the Bulldogs. However, the league title won't be determined until three weeks from now, when the league descends on Princeton's own DeNunzio Pool to compete in the 2019 Ivy League Championships.
The Tigers would love nothing more to open Ivies the way they did HYP weekend, as the quartet of Izzy Reis, Jenny Ma, Elaine Zhou and Cathy Teng won the 200 medley relay in 1:41.67, more than a full second faster than Yale's runner-up time.
Sophomore Stephanie Nelson finished fourth in the 100 back in 56.49, while senior tri-captain Joanna Curry placed second in 200 fly in 2:00.40, less than a half second off the winning time from Yale's Carrie Heilbrun.
The Friday session closed with a 400 IM exhibition swim, and Princeton had the top two finishers in the event. Reigning Ivy champion Regan Barney had the fastest time in 4:14.69, while Curry took second in 4:15.27.
Sophomore Sophia Peifer gave Princeton a second individual runner-up finish Friday, as she placed second on the 3-meter board with 304.80 points. She was one of two Tigers with strong efforts on the boards this weekend; junior Mimi Lin came back Saturday and placed second on the 1-meter board with 283.30 points, only 1.5 points off the winning score. The 1-meter event couldn't have been much closer; Peifer finished fifth overall, but even she was only 2.3 points out of the top spot.
After a fourth-place finish for Teng in the 100 free (51.57), Nelson took third in the 200 back in 2:00.76. Senior Kate Didion had a strong showing in the 200 breast, taking second in 2:18.24, while sophomore Courtney Tseng finished second in the 500 in 4:56.29.
The run of second-place finishes continued in the 100 fly, as Reis finished behind Harvard's Miki Dahlke in 55.20.
Tired of the runner-up spot, the 400 free relay made sure that nobody would come close to ruining its finish. Reis gave Princeton a lead from the start, but Lauren McGrath made sure Princeton had total control of the race on the second leg; she produced the only sub-50 (49.61) split to put the Tigers up by more than two seconds.
Both Teng and Monica McGrath continued to build the advantage, giving Princeton a final highlight to take home and build on during the final preparations for Ivies. The championship meet is set to begin Wednesday, Feb. 20, and will run through Saturday, Feb. 23.
Princeton closed HYP in impressive fashion, winning the 400 free relay by more than 3 seconds ... check out Monica McGrath's anchor leg in a dominant relay. Yale takes the meet, but we'll see everybody in three weeks at DENUNZIO for #2019Ivies! pic.twitter.com/ErFSAhdQPB
