Princeton Completes Weekend Sweep Of Charleston 3-1
February 09, 2019 | Men's Volleyball
The Princeton men's volleyball team made sure it didn't have to spend its 2019 season digging itself out of an early hole in EIVA play. The Tigers got off to a strong start in league play this weekend with a home sweep of Charleston, a pair of wins that concluded with Saturday's 3-1 victory in Dillon Gym.
Junior Greg Luck paced the Tigers with 17 kills, eight digs and four service aces (all team highs), while Parker Dixon added 14 kills and a pair of blocks, to lead Princeton to a 25-18, 25-19, 20-25, 25-22 win over a resilient Charleston squad. One day after Princeton powered its way to a 3-0 sweep in its EIVA opener, the Golden Eagles pushed deep into the fourth before Luck's final serve rolled over the tape and fell to the floor for a match-clinching win.
Princeton hit .323 for the match with seven different players recording multiple kills. Junior George Huhmann had six kills and five blocks, while freshman Brady Wedbush added five kills and two blocks. Sophomore Joe Kelly had 44 assists and four digs, while Kendall Ratter came off the bench to aid in the defensive push with five digs.
Princeton was in full control through the first two sets, but Charleston built a lead in the third and held on for a 25-20 win. The Golden Eagles built a similar lead in the fourth, but freshman Jerod Nelsen led the pivotal stretch of the match when he served Princeton on a 7-0 run to reclaim the lead. Nelson ended the stretch with three straight aces to ignite Dillon Gym, and clutch play late by the Princeton upperclassmen secured the win.
The Tigers will look for similar success next Saturday night when they host George Mason at 7 pm; the Patriots won the regular season title last year, but Princeton knocked them out of the EIVA postseason with a 3-1 win in Fairfax. The match will be streamed live on ESPN+.
