Sowers Shatters Another Record But Princeton Falls To Penn
March 16, 2019 | Men's Lacrosse
Michael Sowers reached the 200-point for his career during Saturday afternoon's game at Penn. He did this in his 34th career game, which is by far the fastest any Princeton player has ever done.
The goal that gave him Point No. 200 came early in the second half and tied the game after Penn led by one at the break. Then, 19 seconds later, freshman Jake Stevens scored the first goal of his career, and suddenly Princeton was up a goal.
And that's when the good news for Princeton ended. Penn answered with six straight from that point, and even after Princeton stopped that run, Penn added six more. In the end, it added up to a 19-10 Quaker win on Franklin Field in the Ivy League opener for both.
There was just too much possession time for Penn, and it started with Kyle Gallagher, the Hofstra transfer, who won 20 of 30 face-offs and added 16 ground balls and two assists as Princeton tried five different face-off men. Led by Gallagher's performance, Penn had a 44-24 edge in ground balls, which in turn led to 56 shots by the Quakers.
The game was 6-5 Penn at the half before Sowers tied it just over a minute later and Stevens put Princeton on top after that. Before the Tigers could celebrate, though, Gallagher won the next face-off and set up Sean Lulley to retie it just eight seconds later. It was 12-7 Penn seven minutes later. Penn won 15 of 20 face-offs in the second half.
Sowers, who had a goal and two assists, now has 81 goals and 119 assists in his career, giving him 200 points and making him the seventh player in program history to get there. Prior to Sowers, the fastest any other player had done so was 49 games, 15 more than Sowers, which is what it took Hall-of-Famer Kevin Lowe to get his 200th point. Lowe is Princeton's career leader with 247 career points.
NOTES
* Stevens added a second goal, and he also had two ground balls. Phillip Robertson and Jamie Atkinson also had a pair of goals for the Tigers.
* George Baughan had three caused turnovers and two ground balls and is now in double figures in caused turnovers with 11.
* Chris Brown had a goal and two assists. Brown extended his streak of consecutive games with at least one goal to 19, or every game of his career. Brown leads the team with 14 goals.
* Charlie Durbin and Connor McCarthy also had a goal, and freshman Alexander Vardaro had an assist to keep his streak of having at least one point in every game alive.
* Erik Peters made his first career start in goal and made 15 saves.
* Princeton hosts Yale next Saturday on Sherrerd Field, with face-off at 3. The Princeton women open the doubleheader hosting Brown at noon.
