No. 18 Johns Hopkins Knocks Off Princeton 14-12
March 02, 2019 | Men's Lacrosse
The 2019 Princeton-Johns Hopkins men's lacrosse game figured to have what the three that preceded it did not: a dramatic fourth quarter.
Instead, Hopkins upped its game at the right time, putting together a five-goal run spanning the end of the third quarter and beginning of the fourth to break open a close game and then held off two late Princeton goals for a 14-12 win over the Tigers.
Princeton led 9-7 after an extra-man goal by Michael Sowers with 2:41 left in the third quarter, but it would be 12-9 Hopkins before Princeton would score again, on a Connor McCarthy goal with 5:34 to play. Hopkins answered with two more before goals in final 1:44 by Beau Pederson and Alexander Vardaro, both on Michael Sowers assists, made it a 14-12 final.
The game was close throughout, unlike the three previous editions, in which the games were long decided before the final 15 minutes. This time, it was 3-3 at the end of the first quarter and 6-5 Tigers at halftime when Jamie Atkinson scored just as time expired, also on a Sowers assist.
Sowers had a five-point day, with two goals and and an assist, and Charlie Durbin had three more goals, giving him nine for the season. Chris Brown had two goals and an assist.
George Baughan had a great day for the Tigers, with four caused turnovers and five ground balls.
Princeton has a quick turnaround to a game at Navy Tuesday at 4.
