Princeton Rolls Past Columbia In Ivy League Opener 19-1

In women's college lacrosse, a 10-goal lead means a running clock.

It took the Princeton women's lacrosse team nearly 21 minutes Wednesday against Penn State to get there. In Saturday afternoon's Ivy League opener, the Tigers bettered that by more than three minutes.

In a stunning start to the league season, the five-time defending champs rolled past Columbia 19-1 at Sherrerd Field at Class of 1952 Stadium. The clock started running when it got to be 10-0 after 17:53 had elapsed, and the lead was 15-0 at halftime.

"It obviously was a great way to start to our league season," Princeton head coach Chris Sailer said. "We were certainly focused and ready right from the opening draw. We got contributions from a lot of people on both sides of the field, and we had no letup even after we got out to the early lead. No game in the league is ever a certainty, and you have to be ready to play."

Princeton improved to 3-1 overall, bouncing back from a loss last Saturday at Virginia with a 21-10 win over Penn State and now the win over the visiting Lions, who fell to 2-3. Princeton had beaten Columbia twice last year, including a wild 22-16 game during the regular season and then a 17-7 win in the Ivy League tournament semifinals. This time it was all Tigers.

Tess D'Orsi started the scoring 2:15 into the game, and it was 4-0 less than two minutes later after Kathryn Hallett, Allie Rogers and Elizabeth George all added their first of the day. It was 10-0 when George scored her third with 12:07 still to go in the first half.

"Columbia gave us a lot of fits last year, and they certainly had our attention coming in," Sailer said. "We played well Wednesday night against Penn State, and I was happy with how we built on that."

NOTES

* D'Orsi continued the blistering start to her junior year with four goals, giving her a team-best 17 for the year. With her five against Penn State, she had a nine-goal week. George had four goals of her own, and her 12 are second on the team behind D'Orsi.

* Kyla Sears followed up her three-goal, four-assist performance against Penn State with a goal and three assists against Columbia. Sears now has 11 points in her last two games after having three in the first two.

* Princeton outshot Columbia 34-11. Sam Fish allowed one goal and made five saves in 56:45.

* Hallett, Rogers and Julia Haney all had three-point days.

* There were plenty of firsts for Princeton as Sailer used every healthy player. Freshman Lillian Stout had her first career goal. Laura and Maria Pansini both scored goals, making it the first time the two sisters both scored in the same game. Backup goalie Lucy Norton had her first career save, and freshmen Gaby Hamburger, Shea Smith and Annie Price all had their first career ground balls.

* Princeton hosts Stony Brook this coming Saturday, March 9, in its next game.
