No. 2 Maryland Defeats No. 14 Princeton, 15-7
March 27, 2019 | Women's Lacrosse
There was a sequence with a little less than 20 minutes to go in the Princeton women's lacrosse team's game at Maryland Wednesday night that pretty much told the whole story.
Â
Kyla Sears had a free position but was cut off before she could shoot. Still with the ball, she made a strong move to get into the middle, but she was cut off by three Maryland defenders and lost possession. Tess D'Orsi then tried to hockey-stick the loose ball into the net but couldn't get much on it.
Â
Maryland's Megan Taylor scooped it up and cleared, and Maryland cashed it in on the other end for a goal of its own.
Â
Against the No. 2 team in the country, the margin for error isn't what it might usually be. Princeton found that out on Capital One Field, as Maryland pressured Princeton everywhere, got off to a quick start and stayed unbeaten with a 15-7 win over the 14th ranked Tigers.
Â
Princeton and Maryland were meeting for the 40th time, and the Terps now lead 32-8. The teams have met at least once a year every year since 1993.
Â
Maryland is now 11-0 and one of three unbeaten teams in Division I, along with Boston College and Michigan.
Â
"We play Maryland every year because they're always one of the very best," Princeton head coach Chris Sailer said. "You know it's never going to be easy. We want to be challenged, and we certainly were. They don't make anything simple for you, that's for sure."
Â
Princeton came into the game ranked second in Division I in team shooting percentage at .520 but was able to manage only seven goals on 26 shots (.269).
Â
Maryland scored the first three goals in the first three minutes of the game before Sears set up Julia Haney for the first for the Tigers. Maryland then added two more to lead 5-1 after five minutes.
Â
Princeton then traded goals with Maryland until the half to trail 8-4 at the break.
Â
Elizabeth George had three goals and an assist, while Sears (1G, 2A) and Julia Haney (2G, 1A) had three points nights. Allie Rogers also had a goal. Â
Â
Marge Donovan had a great game for Princeton, with four caused turnovers and four ground balls. Nonie Andersen and Kathyrn Hallett had two caused turnovers apiece.
Â
Taylor, the nation's leader in save percentage, made 14 saves for the Terrapins. Kali Hartshorn had a huge night for Maryland, with four goals, one assist and 11 draw controls.
Â
Princeton is now off for six days, with no game this weekend. Up next is a Tuesday night home game against Villanova.
