Balanced Effort Leads Princeton To 14-4 Win Over Stony Brook
April 06, 2019 | Men's Lacrosse
If you're looking for who Princeton's best player was Saturday night at Stony Brook, well, then you have all kinds of choices. Was it:
* Emmet Cordrey, who had four goals and an assist?
* Michael Sowers, who had five assists?
* Chris Brown, with three goals and two assists?
* Cathal Roberts, who had three caused turnovers in his first career start?
* Mike Morean, who had two goals in transition?
* Andrew Song, who had a goal, a caused turnover and five ground balls?
* Erik Peters, who made 13 saves and allowed just four goals?
When you have that many options, and maybe even more, your team had itself a good night, and that's exactly how it was for Princeton. The Tigers gave up the first goal of the night and then got contributions from basically everyone, rolling to a 14-4 win over Stony Brook.
Princeton is now 4-6 on the season with a game Tuesday night at home at 6 against Siena. Stony Brook fell to 6-5 and had a three-game winning streak snapped.
The four goals were the fewest Princeton has allowed since a 7-3 win over Dartmouth in 2016.
The win did nothing to help Princeton in the Ivy League race, or maybe it did. The Tigers started their five-game winning streak to end the season a year ago with a 16-8 win over Stony Brook, and they are hoping this year follows that same pattern.
Stony Brook led once, at 1-0, but Princeton would shut out the Seawolves for nearly 23 minutes, by which time it was 7-1 Tigers. It would be 9-2 at the break and no closer than six goals at any point of the second half.
Roberts was making his first career start, alongside his older brother Aran, who undoubtedly became the first brothers born and raised in Ireland to start on defense in an American Division I lacrosse game. Cathal had his three caused turnovers, leading the team, and two ground balls, as the defense hounded Stony Brook into 4 for 45 shooting. Princeton, on the other hand, took just 29 shots, which they turned into their 14 goals.
Sowers moved into third place all-time at Princeton in career points with 219 after his five-assist night, and he trails only Kevin Lowe (247) and Ryan Boyle (232). Brown extended his streak of consecutive games with a goal to all 23 of his career.
Cordrey's senior year continues to be wildly impressive, as he now has 24 goals and 14 assists.
For Song, his goal was the third of his career. He had started the last two games on close defense before moving back to his longstick midfield position for this game. Morean, a shortstick defensive middie, had his second career two-goal game.
