TigerBlog on Sam Gravitte's Broadway Debut
Sam Gravitte has gone from Princeton men's lacrosse standout to Broadway actor in a little more than two years.
Gravitte, a 2017 Princeton grad, makes his Broadway debut this week in "Wicked" when he appears in the ensemble and as the understudy for Fiyero, the male lead in the musical. Gravitte has spent a year in the national touring company of the show before coming to the Gershwin Theater on Broadway.
The musical "Wicked" revisits the story of "The Wizard of Oz" from the perspective of the wicked witches.
Acting is the Gravitte family business. Sam's mother Debbie won a Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical for "Jerome Robbins' Broadway." His father Beau has also appeared on Broadway and is also a producer.
"Ever since I was old enough to understand this amazing thing my parents did, I've wanted to be on a Broadway stage," Gravitte wrote on his Instagram page last week. "I feel so incredibly lucky and grateful to say that I'll be making my Broadway debut in 'Wicked' this summer Beyond thankful, beyond excited. Back to Oz!!"
Gravitte was a major contributor to the men's lacrosse team for four years on the defensive end of the field, playing at various times close defense, longstick midfielder and shortstick defensive midfielder. He finished his career with three goals, one assist and exactly 100 ground balls.
During his time at Princeton, Gravitte was also active in theater, including times where he'd play in a lacrosse game during the day and then hustle to the McCarter Theater stage for a performance at night. As a senior he played the male lead in "Once" at McCarter's Berlind Theater.
"I speak for the entire Princeton men's lacrosse family when I say that we couldn't be prouder of Sam," said Princeton head coach Matt Madalon. "It was clear when he was here that he was destined for this. Our whole team went to see him perform when he was in 'Once' and everyone came away awed at his talent. This is a special time for him, and we are just thrilled for him and his family."
