Junior Melia Chittenden won her first race of the 2019 season guiding the Princeton women's cross country team to victory at the Henry Mercer Invitational at Holmdel Park on Saturday morning.
The Tigers, ranked No. 22 in the U.S. Track & FIeld and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) national poll, had a dominating performance with a low score of 19 with the second-place team Marist 35 points back.
Princeton had an average time of 18:24 on the 5k course, with all seven in the top 10.
"We wanted to challenge ourselves on a tough course," head coach Brad Hunt said. "We're building up our training while also using this as chance to learn to win and we did just that. We have another great challenge ahead of us with our eye on Van Cortlandt Park."
A first-team All-Ivy League and all-Region competitor, Chittenden was the first across the line at 18:09.8 and was followed by freshman Maggie Liebich at 18:16.0. Fellow first year Abby Loveys ran 18:24.8 and sophomore India Weir clocked 18:35.2 to take fifth. Senior Madeleine Sumner was the final scorer, taking seventh place overall, at 18:38.6.
Three meets stand between now and the Ivy League Heps at Van Cortlandt Park, the first being the Paul Short Run held at Lehigh University on Saturday, Oct. 5.
