No. 10 Men’s Volleyball Opens EIVA Play With 3-0 Triumph at Charleston

CHARLESTON, W.Va. – Eastern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association (EIVA) play began on a high note for the No. 10 Princeton University men's volleyball team Friday night inside the Wehrle Innovation Center as the Tigers overcame the University of Charleston, 3-0 (25-21, 25-19, 25-22).
Sophomore Jerod Nelsen led match in kills with 11 while senior George Huhmann led the team and tied for the match-high in service aces with three. Sophomore Joe Kelly handed out a match-high 26 assists and senior Parker Dixon led the Tigers in kills with six. Senior Greg Luck recorded a match-high four blocks.
The opening set was very much a back-and-forth battle with the Golden Eagles holding the advantage for much of it. With Charleston up 17-16, kills by Dixon and Kelly gave Princeton an 18-17 lead that it would not relinquish. While the Golden Eagles were able to knot the score 18-18, Nelsen and Luck would record kills and give the Tigers a 20-18 advantage. From there, Princeton held on for the 25-21 victory with set point coming on a Dixon kill.
Charleston would again take an early lead in the second set; when it was ahead 4-3 the Tigers went on a 4-0 run that featured a Golden Eagle service error, a Dixon kill, a double block by Huhmann and Parker along with a Charleston attacking error that gave the Tigers a 7-4 advantage. Princeton would not give up its lead for the remainder of the set, holding on for the 25-19 triumph.
Princeton wasted little time establishing an advantage in the third set, opening it on a 4-0 run led by a Nelsen kill. Charleston would then surge ahead 6-5 thanks to a 5-0 run then take an 11-8 lead. The Tigers then went on another 4-0 run started by a Golden Eagle service error and also featuring a Thompson kill, a Charleston attacking error and a service ace by Dixon that put them ahead 12-11. Princeton would not relinquish its lead for the rest of the match, finishing it three sets after taking the third set 25-22.
