No. T-13 Men’s Volleyball Falls to No. 15 UC San Diego

LA JOLLA, CALIF. – Playing in its first match on a three-match road trip to the state of California, the No. T-13 Princeton University men's volleyball team fell 3-1 (23-25, 25-20, 26-24) to the No. 15 University of California, San Diego Tuesday night inside RIMAC Arena.
Sophomore Jerod Nelsen led the Tigers with career and team-high 20 kills on a .378 attacking percentage while also adding four digs and a team-high four blocks. Junior Joe Kelly led the team in assists with 40 while junior Jess Hunt had a team-high four digs. Senior George Huhmann had three service aces, bringing his career tally to 100. Senior Greg Luck tied with Nelsen for the team-high in blocks, with four.
Kills by Huhmann and junior Parker Dixon helped Princeton get off to a strong start, as it took an initial 5-2 lead. The Tritons responded and took at 15-1 advantage but the Tigers gradually fought back and trimmed the lead to 21-18. Princeton would then knot the score at 21-21 after a pair of Triton attacking errors and a kill by Huhmann. While UC San Diego then took a 23-22 advantage, the Tigers closed the set out with a double block by Luck and Huhmann, a double block by Luck and Nelsen along with a Huhmann service ace to prevail, 25-23.
The Tritons raced out to a 7-4 lead but the Tigers managed to narrow the deficit and make it 9-8 after a kill by Nelson. UC San Diego managed to keep the Tigers at bay leading 15-13, then a Dixon kill made it a two-point set at 18-16 but the Tritons managed to hold on for the 25-20 win in set two.
The third set was a back-and-forth battle from the outset; with the score knotted 12-12 a kill by Dixon and a Huhmann service ace saw Princeton take a 14-12 lead. The Tigers held onto the lead and a block by Luck gave them a 23-21 advantage, but could not capitalize and the Tritons would go on take the third set, 26-24.
An attacking error and a service error by the Tritons saw Princeton take an early 2-0 lead, but UC San Diego responded by racing out to a 10-6 lead. With the Tritons up 14-12 Princeton would go on a 4-0 run that featured kills by Nelsen, Dixon and junior Hunt that saw it take a 15-14 advantage. The Tigers could not maintain their lead, and the Tritons would win the set.
UC San Diego managed to take a 14-12 advantage early in the fourth set, but a 4-0 Tiger fun that featured kills by Nelsen, Hunt and Dixon along with a Kelly service ace saw Princeton jump ahead, 15-14. It would be Princeton's final lead of the match, as the Tritons would pull away for the 25-19 win.
