Men's Hockey Edged In Overtime By Dartmouth, 4-3
January 03, 2020 | Men's Ice Hockey
PRINCETON – Princeton clawed back to force overtime against Dartmouth, but a Big Green goal 1:01 into the extra frame silenced the Hobey Baker Rink crowd as Dartmouth escaped with a 4-3 win.
Drew O'Connor flipped in a loose puck just over a minute into OT, emerging from a scrum in front and denying Princeton on home ice.
Princeton had rallied to force overtime, with Pito Walton's first career goal with 16.4 seconds remaining tying the game. Corey Andonovski had carried the puck up ice with the goalie pulled, and he slid a pass to Luke Keenan who dished to Walton at the top of the zone. Walton walked the blue line and his wrist shot inside the left post tied things up.
Jeremie Forget was stellar in net, with a career-high 41 saves, including 19 in the second period. The first two Dartmouth shots to beat Forget came on breakaways, and the third was a rebound following a stellar cross-crease save on a Dartmouth powerplay.
Dartmouth took an early lead on a breakaway goal from Cam Strong 5:30 into the game.
The Tigers would tie the game, 1-1, before the end of the period via Mike Ufberg's first career goal. Jackson Cressey started the rush, feeding up to Jordan Fogarty who fed a saucer pass on a 2-on-1 to Ufberg who fired a one-timer top corner with 5:42 remaining in the opening period.
Princeton extended its lead to 2-1 via a power-play goal from Spencer Kersten with 10:22 remaining in the second period. Pito Walton had the primary assist, feeding Kersten who walked in and beat Adrian Clark top corner.
The Big Green tied the game, 2-2, with 6:06 left in the second. Collin Rutherford – the Big Green player who had taken the penalty which led to Kersten's goal – was sprung in a breakaway by Tyler Campbell and he beat Forget high gloveside.
Dartmouth started the third period on the powerplay following a Princeton penalty late in the second, and the Big Green needed 0:29 of the third frame to take a 3-2 lead. Mark Gallant scored, easily tapping in a rebound after Forget had denied Quin Foreman at the far post on Dartmouth's first attempt.
The Tigers return to Hobey Baker Rink on January 4 to take on Harvard at 7 p.m. Limited tickets for the matchup with the Crimson are available here.
