No. 11 Women's Lacrosse Stymied By No. 6 Stony Brook
March 08, 2020 | Women's Lacrosse
The first seven minutes were pretty much sixth-ranked Stony Brook at its best, winning draws, applying pressure and finishing strongly.Â
Â
The next 53 minutes were pretty much 11-ranked Princeton at its grittiest, scraping to get back into the game and almost climbing out of the early hole more than once.Â
Â
In the end, the beginning was the difference.Â
Â
Stony Brook used those first seven minutes to put up seven goals and then held off every charge Princeton could muster to defeat the Tigers 18-12 at Lavalle Stadium Sunday afternoon. The loss dropped Princeton to 3-2 heading into midterms and a nine-day break until a March 17 game at Jacksonville.
Â
"Stony Brook is a great team," said Princeton head coach Chris Sailer. "We knew they were going to be tough, and that's why we want to play them. We want to challenge ourselves every year. We have a chance now to learn from this game and continue to improve. We have a lot of big games coming up."
Â
Stony Brook came out on fire in this one, scoring 36 seconds into the game and then building the lead quickly. In fact, after those first seven minutes, it was 7-0 Seawolves.Â
Â
Princeton would right its ship a bit, and in fact the key moment of the game came with six minutes to go in the first half, after the Tigers had cut it to 9-6. Kyla Sears had a great chance but was robbed on one end of the field by Stony Brook goalie Kameron Halsall, who then triggered a fast break the other way that ended in a Taryn Ohlmiller goal about 15 seconds later.
Â
Instead of a 9-7 game with Princeton momentum, it was 10-6 Stony Brook. The Tigers never quit, but Stony Brook had the answer each time it needed one.
Â
Sears typified the Princeton effort with four goals and an assist on a day when she was hounded every time she touched the ball. Princeton also continued to get strong production from its two freshmen scorers Grace Tauckus (3G) and Kari Buonnano (2G, 1A).Â
Â
Kate Mulham also had two goals for the Tigers, while senior Annie Cory had a goal as well.Â
Â
Sam Fish saw 33 shots on the day, including 29 on goal, and made 11 saves. Princeton's defense also caused 10 turnovers, led by the three leading scorers, Sears, Tauckus and Buonnano, who had two each.Â
Princeton returns to action March 17 at Jacksonville. Opening draw is set for 7 p.m.
