Schreiber Named Top Midfielder From PLL Championship Series
August 14, 2020 | Men's Lacrosse
The award for the top midfielder in the Premier Lacrosse League is named for the Gait brothers, Gary and Paul. If you know anything about lacrosse, then you know who the Gait brothers are. If you don't, they're both Hall-of-Fame midfielders who played at Syracuse and then had long careers professionally and internationally. Think of Michael Jordan, if he had an identical twin brother.
Maybe one of these years, the award will become the Gait Brothers/Schreiber Award. For the second time in the league's two-year history, Princeton's Tom Schreiber has won the Gait Brothers Award as the PLL's top midfielder.
"Nobody from Princeton lacrosse can ever say enough good things about Tom Schreiber," says Princeton head coach Matt Madalon. "When you have Tom Schreiber out there representing your program, you have to be thrilled."
Â
Schreiber led all PLL midfielders during the two-week abbreviated championship series with 16 points, on 12 goals and four assists. His 12 goals were four better than any other middie. He also led all PLL midfielders with a 41 percent shooting percentage.
Schreiber was the league's top middie last year as well, after he led all middies with 37 points and led the league with 20 assists.
A 2014 graduate, Schreiber was a three-time first-team All-American, a three-time national midfielder of the year and a four-time first-team All-Ivy League selection at Princeton. He also won the Lowe's Senior Class Award for his work in the classroom and the community, in addition to on the field.
He has had a great professional and international career since graduation. In 2018 in Israel he scored the game-winning goal with one second left in the championship game of the World Championships, and he also won the championship in Major League Lacrosse with the Ohio Machine before joining the PLL. He has been the MLL Most Valuable Player and the National Lacrosse League Rookie of the Year with the Toronto Rock despite having very limited box lacrosse experience.
