Men's Hockey Falls At Providence
December 10, 2021 | Men's Ice Hockey
A depleted Tigers squad ran into a buzzsaw at Schneider Arena as three goals in the opening 5:29 of the second period provided separation for Providence College in a 7-0 loss for Princeton.
Injuries on the back end had the Tigers behind the eight-ball entering the game, as Princeton dressed only five defensemen with Mark Paolini, David Ma, Nick Carabin and Noah de la Durantaye all unavailable due to injury.
A Providence team with nine NHL Draft picks in the lineup took advantage of the undermanned Princeton defense, outshooting the Tigers by a 39-18 margin. Aidan Porter made 32 saves – tying his career high – in what was a busy night between the pipes.
Ben Mirageas gave Providence a 1-0 lead 6:14 into the game via a long-range wrist shot from the point which found its way through traffic in front of the net and by Porter.
1:49 into the second period, Mirageas added his second of the night with a snap shot inside the left post off the rush.
Brett Berard increased Providence's lead to 3-0 with a power-play goal 5:09 into the second period. Just 20 seconds later, the Friars made it 4-0 with a goal from Chase Yoder who found himself open after the puck bounced off a stick and to him all alone at the top of the circles.
The Tigers put together a big-time penalty kill in the second period, killing off a five-minute major after Christian O'Neill was called for a crosscheck to the head with 9:40 remaining in the middle frame. Porter stopped four shots during the kill, helped along by a pair of posts hit by the Friars.
2:49 into the third period, Providence extended its lead to 5-0 via a Riley Duran goal. Just under a minute later, Patrick Moynihan scored to make it 6-0. Both goals came in transition as the Friars pounced on loose pucks in the slot after the Tigers had stopped an initial chance. Matt Koopman scored a shorthanded goal for Providence with 2:12 remaining.
The Tigers and Friars will finish their two-game set on Saturday night. Faceoff is set for 7 p.m. at Schneider Arena.
