Currier Named PLL's Outstanding Midfielder
September 21, 2021 | Men's Lacrosse
It's quite possible that one of these days, there will be a lacrosse award named for Zach Currier, and it'll go to the player who can do pretty much everything extraordinarily well while simultaneously being the player with the best motor on the field.
For now, though, Currier will have to be content with winning an award named for two other midfielders – Paul and Gary Gait. Those two, who are basically the gold standard for midfielders in the sports history, are the ones for whom the award for the top midfielder in the Premier Lacrosse League is named. And for the third time in the three years of the league's existence, a Princeton alum has won the award.
Currier, Princeton Class of 2017, is the 2021 winner for the Gait Brothers Midfielder of the Year Award. He follows Tom Schreiber, who was a senior when Currier was a freshman, as the only two winners of the award, after Schreiber was honored in 2019 and 2020. Schreiber was named a finalist this year.
Currier, who helped the Waterdogs to the top seed in the PLL playoffs, did what Currier does all season, which is to fill up the statsheet while also being so much more than his stats. Currier had 11 goals and 11 assists while adding 51 ground balls and seven caused turnovers. No other player in the league combined his scoring ability with his ability to gain possession and cause turnovers.
His game at Princeton was defined by that ability. In his senior year alone Currier had 24 goals, 34 assists and 130 ground balls while winning 57 percent of his face-offs and leading the team in ground balls.
As a professional, Currier has won championships in Major League Lacrosse with the Denver Outlaws and the National Lacrosse League with the Calgary Roughnecks , as well as a World Championship in box lacrosse with Team Canada. He was also a member of the Canadian national team that finished second at the 2018 World Championships.
