Princeton Falls To Rutgers 3-1
September 26, 2021 | Field Hockey
A pair of field hockey teams who had big league wins Friday met Sunday at Bedford Field. This time, the prize wasn't going to be a step up in the conference standings. This time, it was going to be a Top 20 win.
Rutgers, ranked 10th and probably moving up, defeated No. 17 Princeton to earn yet another impressive victory. The Scarlet Knights had defeated No. 3 Northwestern Friday in Evanston, and the resume for RU already includes wins over nationally ranked Duke, UConn, Syracuse, Monmouth and Delaware.
Princeton, who had opened the Ivy League season Friday with a 5-1 win at Penn, scored first in this one, just five minutes in, after drawing a penalty corner. Ali McCarthy inserted to Ophilie Bemelmans, and Beth Yeager then lifted it into the top of the cage. For Yeager, it was her eighth goal of the year in eight games.
From there, though, Rutgers was able to take control. It was a 1-1 game at halftime after the Knights scored nearly four minutes into the second on a corner of their own, and they would take the lead at 2-1 off another corner five minutes into the third. The lead grew to 3-1 four minutes later.
Rutgers had a 12-6 advantage in shots. Princeton will be home twice this coming weekend, hosting Yale Friday at 5 and then UConn Sunday at noon.
