Top-Five Matchups Set to Open Season for Fencers at Penn's Elite Invitational

Princeton's No. 1-ranked women's and No. 5-ranked men's fencing teams will be tested from the start Saturday at Penn's Elite Invitational with a pair of top-five matchups on both sides to start a six-match day in Philadelphia.

The men's team opens against No. 1 Notre Dame at 8:30 before meeting No. 3 Ohio State at 9:45. The women start against No. 2 Notre Dame before facing No. 5 Ohio State. Another top-10 matchup awaits the women's team against No. 9 Northwestern later in the day at 2:15 p.m.

The Tigers ended last season bringing home a top-four NCAA Championships trophy for the first time since 2017, a year that saw the program win its seventh straight top-four trophy. Then-rookie Maia Weintraub won the NCAA women's foil individual title last season, becoming Princeton's sixth NCAA women's fencing individual champion and fifth in the last 10 years.

The women's team returns four All-Ivy League honorees from last season in épée Jessica Lin, foilists Weintraub and May Tieu, and saber Ryan Jenkins. On the men's side, 2022 All-Ivy honorees Jasper Levy (foil), Tristan Szapary (épée), Michael Bissinger (épée) and Mohamed Hamza (foil) return.
