November 20, 2022 | Men's Water Polo
PROVIDENCE – The No. 8 Men's Water Polo Team used a strong offensive performance to win the Northeast Water Polo Conference Championship, 13-8, over the No. 18 St. Francis Brooklyn Terriers on Sunday.
It's the first time in program history that the Tigers have won consecutive conference crowns and it's also the third title in the last four playing seasons. It was also the team's 26th win, tying the season record set in 2021.
Ryan Neapole started the scoring with a tally at the 6:18 mark of the first quarter. After a several big stops from Antonio Knez, Roko Pozaric added on to the Tigers' lead with just four seconds left on the shot clock. Yurian Quinones tacked on to the Princeton lead, giving head coach Dustin Litvak's group a 3-0 lead after eight minutes.
Neapole posted his second of the contest to begin the second frame. The Terriers finally got on the board almost halfway through the session, but Vladan Mitrovic quickly ended any thoughts of a run with a goal 18 seconds later. Joan Coloma added a backbreaker as the clock expired to end the first half, setting the score at 5-1.
After a tally from Quinones to open the second half, St. Francis made a push with consecutive tallies to cut its deficit to three, 6-3.
The two teams exchanged goals, but a tally from George Caras set the contest at 8-4 as third frame finished.
Coloma and Caras pushed Princeton's lead to six, 10-4, forcing a St. Francis timeout. The Terriers made one final run with consecutive tallies, but a five-meter goal from Keller Maloney put the game away.
The NCAA Water Polo Championship Bracket will come out some time before midnight Sunday.
