Men's Ice Hockey Shuts Out No. 20 RIT, 5-0
November 26, 2022 | Men's Ice Hockey
Princeton knocked off a Top-20 team for the seventh season in a row, blowing wide open the second game of its series at No. 20 RIT to the tune of a 5-0 win in Rochester.
Five different players scored for Princeton, including David Jacobs whose first career goal was the game winner. Nick Seitz, Ian Murphy, Liam Gorman and Pito Walton added the other tallies for Princeton.
Nick Carabin and Mike Kennedy each had two assists for Princeton, while Seitz, Gorman and Jacobs added helpers of their own to also pick up two-point evenings.
For Carabin, Kennedy and Jacobs, the two-point games are the first of their careers. Gorman and Seitz each tied their career highs with two points in the game.
Freshman Jayden Sison had an assist for his first career point while playing back on defense after an injury to Tyler Rubin in the first period required the usual forward to slide back onto a defensive pair.
Ethan Pearson made 23 saves for his third shutout of the season.
The first period was scoreless, despite 20 total shots on goal combined from both teams. Princeton held a slight 11-9 edge in the first-period shots, each team with a handful of truly dangerous chances.
The best look for Princeton came on a two-on-one with Adam Robbins just off on a pass to Nick Seitz.
At the other end, Ethan Pearson made his best stop of the first period with 1:40 left, denying Grady Hobbs from point-blank range with a nice right-to-left sliding pad save.
After the scoreless first period, Princeton needed just 0:33 to break the ice early in the second period via the first career goal for David Jacobs. A strong forecheck from Nick Seitz and Jacobs fed the puck back to Mike Kennedy for a shot from the point that was collected by Jacobs and slid home for a 1-0 Princeton lead.
Toward the end of the middle stanza, Princeton struck again with a beautiful end-to-end rush produced by Nick Seitz. After collecting a loose puck behind his own goal line, Seitz weaved his way through RIT's resistance and back-handed home his third goal of the season for a 2-0 Princeton lead.
Princeton exploded in the third period to take control of the game.
Ian Murphy extended Princeton's lead 4:02 into the third period, redirecting a Nick Carabin shot from the point for his first goal of the season.
Things would get chippy from there, with multiple penalties on each team resulting in a parade to the penalty box. At one point, each team was playing with three skaters aside, but eventually Princeton had a 5-on-3 including a major called on RIT for interference.
Liam Gorman would score a PPG during the sequence, cashing in a pass from Jayden Sison down low for a 4-0 lead. Just over a minute later and moments after the power play expired, Pito Walton extended the lead to 5-0 with a wrist shot from the point that deflected off the goalie's glove and over his head before dropping across the goal line.
Princeton returns to Hobey Baker Rink for its next four games, starting with Clarkson (December 2; 7 p.m.) and St. Lawrence (December 3; 7 p.m.)
