Princeton Announces 2023 Men's Lacrosse Schedule
December 16, 2022 | Men's Lacrosse
2023 Princeton Men's Lacrosse Schedule (dates and times subject to change)
Home is where the heart is. Home is where a new Final Four banner has been installed. Home is where you'll find the Princeton men's lacrosse team this season.
Â
Princeton, fresh off its 11th NCAA Final Four appearance, will play eight of its 12 regular-season games at home in the 2023 season, starting with four home games in the first 15 days of the schedule, a stretch that includes the top two seeds from last year's NCAA tournament.
Â
Of its 12 games, Princeton will play nine against teams who were in the NCAA tournament a year ago, including the other three teams who were part of Championship Weekend. The Tigers will also be renewing their rivalry with Syracuse, also at home.
Â
From Feb. 21 through April 1, Princeton will not play a team that didn't reach the NCAA tournament a year ago. Two of the three teams on Princeton's schedule who did not reach the 2022 tournament (Monmouth and Syracuse) played in the 2021 tournament.
Â
"There's no doubt that we are challenging ourselves, but that's how we like it," says Princeton head coach Matt Madalon. "As always, we want to play the best schedule we can, and I think we've done that again for 2023. Our goal is to get back to where we were at the end of last season, and our schedule last year certainly prepared us for that challenge."
Â
The season begins on Feb. 18 in the second game of a Sherrerd Field doubleheader, when the Tigers host Monmouth at 3, after the women's team plays Virginia at noon. That game is followed by a Tuesday night game against Manhattan, the defending MAAC champion, to start a stretch of seven straight games against NCAA teams from 2022.
Â
Following Manhattan, Princeton will host defending NCAA champion Maryland, who defeated the Tigers in the semifinals a year ago. Does it get any easier after that? Next up is Georgetown, the No. 2 seed a year ago. Then it's Rutgers, a Final Four team. Then Penn, a team Rutgers nipped in the quarterfinals. Then Yale, whom Princeton defeated in the quarterfinals. Then Brown, the top seed in last year's Ivy tournament. The only two away games during that stretch are at Rutgers and Penn, neither of which is more than an hour from Princeton.
Â
Even when the run of NCAA teams ends on April 8, the opponent is one that would surprise nobody were it to be playing on this year's Championship Weekend. That opponent is Syracuse, and the matchup on Sherrerd Field — the first between the teams since 2013 — will renew one of the greatest rivalries college lacrosse has ever seen. Princeton and Syracuse have played in four NCAA championship games, splitting them (Tigers in 1992 and 2001; Syracuse in 2000 and 2002), and the two teams won every NCAA title from 1992 through 2004 except in 1999 and 2003.
Â
Princeton will then finish the regular season with a trip to Dartmouth, a home game against Harvard (2022 NCAA team) and a trip to Cornell (2022 NCAA runner-up).
