No. 3 Princeton Falls At No. 11 Yale 14-12
March 26, 2022 | Men's Lacrosse
It was late in the third quarter of the Princeton-Yale men's lacrosse game Saturday afternoon in New Haven. Alex Slusher ripped a shot off the pipe. Seconds later, Yale scored. Instead of up two, Princeton was even with Yale.
Â
Now it was late in the fourth quarter. Yale had possession, up one. Princeton withstood seven shots but couldn't get it back. Then Yale scored the backbreaker.
Â
On a day when every possession was critical, it was moments like that made all the difference. In the end No. 11 Yale made enough plays to come away with the win, defeating the third-ranked Tigers 14-12.
Â
The loss dropped Princeton to 5-2 overall and 1-1 in the Ivy League. Yale improved to 4-2 and 1-1.
Â
The game marked Princeton's fifth straight game against a team ranked in the top 11, and the Tigers went 3-2 in that stretch. Princeton has another nationally ranked opponent, Brown, next Saturday in Providence.
Â
Princeton rallied from a 7-4 deficit to take the lead at 10-9 late in the third after Chris Brown, Alexander Vardaro and Jake Stevens all scored in a 1:36 span. That's when Slusher almost built it to a two-goal lead, but his shot rocketed away all the back towards midfield. Yale then scored and scored again, making it 11-10 Bulldogs after three.
Â
Princeton tied it at 11-11 on Vardaro's fourth early in the final quarter. It was 13-12 Yale when that eight-shot possession happened, and when that eighth shot went in with 2:28 left, the lead was two. Princeton would not score again.
Â
Vardaro had a four-goal, two-assist day, and Princeton got two goals each from Brown, Slusher, Stevens and Coulter Mackesy.
Â
Tyler Sandoval won 18 of 28 face-offs and had 11 ground balls.
Â
The game featured 106 shots (54 from Yale, 52 from Princeton). The Tigers were hurt by 23 turnovers.
