Men’s Volleyball Suffers Weekend Sweep at Harvard
March 05, 2022 | Men's Volleyball
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The Princeton University men's volleyball team fell to Harvard 3-1 (22-25, 25-22, 25-9, 25-23) for the second time in as many days, Saturday night inside the Malkin Athletic Center.
Sophomore Ben Harrington lead the Tigers with 10 kills, the only player who recorded double digit kills in the game. Harrington also had a team high in digs (11) and service aces (2). Meanwhile, Joe Kelly recorded 19 assists.
The Tigers began the first set with the momentum on their side, jumping out to a 6-2 lead thanks to a few Harvard errors and two early kills from Nate Thompson. Princeton would extend their lead to seven at 12-5, after a nifty off-speed kill by Joe Kelly. The orange and black remained ahead by seven as late as 23-17, before Harvard rattled off six points in a row. The Tigers held fast however, and took the first set 25-22.
Princeton once again took an early advantage in the second set, a Nyherowo Omene kill making it 7-4 in favor of the Tigers. Harvard battled back to tie the game at 9-9, eventually taking a four-point lead which they would hold as far along as 18-14. The Tigers would be the ones to apply the pressure in the second set, a Brady Wedbush kill pulling the Tigers within one at 19-18. Princeton would remain within two of Harvard, but the Crimson would take the second set, 25-22.
The third set was one the Tigers would like to forget, as they managed to score just nine points and surrendered a 19-4 run to close out the set.
Neither team was able to pull away from the other in the fourth set. In fact, the biggest lead either team held was two points. A Ben Harrington kill would tie the game at 14-all, while a Joe Kelly block would even things up for the Tigers at 20 apiece. The two teams would remain deadlocked at 21, 22, and 23. The last two points were hotly contested, but Harvard would win both and secure another 3-1 victory.
