Ben Harrington Honored as EIVA Newcomer of the Year

PRINCETON, N.J. – The Eastern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association (EIVA) announced its postseason awards for the 2022 season Tuesday afternoon, and sophomore Ben Harrington of the Princeton University men's volleyball team was honored as the EIVA Newcomer of the Year. Additionally, Harrington was named First Team All-EIVA, and junior Nate Thompson was named Honorable Mention All-EIVA.

Harrington has had a tremendous season, leading the Tigers and ranking inside the EIVA top-10 in kills (260) and kills per set (3.17), along with service aces (49), and service aces per set (0.60), a category where he ranks third in the nation and leads the EIVA. Harrington also leads the Tigers in digs (118), and digs per set (1.48), while ranking second in blocks (43). He is the fourth player to be named Newcomer of the Year under Head Coach Sam Shweisky, joining George Huhmann '20 in 2017, Cody Kessel in 2012, and Pat Schwagler in 2010.

In Princeton's win over St. Francis College Brooklyn, on Saturday, February 13, Harrington recorded a career-high 18 kills on a .577 hitting percentage, along with a career-high six blocks. He recorded double digit kills in 17 matches, and finished with at least 15 kills on six occasions. Harrington had two double-doubles in 2022 (17 kills and nine digs at Harvard on Mar. 5, 10 kills and 11 digs at Harvard on Mar. 5), and had three matches with five service aces.

Thompson ranks second on the team in kills per set (2.63), and third in total kills (142), while hitting .323. He also ranks third in service aces (19). He recorded a career-high 17 kills in Princeton's win over St. Francis Brooklyn on Mar. 13, and recorded double digit kills on eight occasions. Thompson also finished with a career-best eight digs against UC San Diego on Jan. 29.

The conference also announced its 2022 All-EIVA Academic Team and graduate student Jess Hunt (Civil & Environmental Engineering, 3.44), seniors Niko Gjaja (Public & International Affairs, 3.83), Attila Delingat (Mechanical Engineering, 3.32), Jerod Nelsen )Operations Research & Financial Engineering, 3.82), and Joe Kelly (Economics, 3.60) were honored along with juniors Brady Wedbush (Mechnical Engineering, 3.39), Danny Sun (Physics, 3.89), and Nico Posivak (Economics, 3.60). Sophomores Charlie Rogers (Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering, 3.95), Gavin Leising (Computer Science, 3.93), Josh Coan (Public & International Affairs, 3.75), and Harrington (Economics, 3.70) also earned recognition.
