Men's Lacrosse Sees NCAA Tournament Run End In National Semifinals
May 28, 2022 | Men's Lacrosse
EAST HARTFORD – A special 2022 season for Princeton Men's Lacrosse came to an end in the national semifinals as No. 1 Maryland's hot start was too much for the Tigers to overcome in a 13-8 loss. The Tigers finish the 2022 campaign with an 11-5 record, while Maryland improves to 17-0.
Maryland sped out to a 5-1 lead after the first quarter, scoring the final four goals of the opening frame after the teams traded goals to open the contest.
Luke Crimmins scored 5:16 into the period to get Princeton on the board after Maryland opened the scoring, but Keegan Khan scored the next two for the Terps – part of a first-quarter hat trick – and Maryland was off and running.
Christian Ronda connected for the Tigers to begin the second quarter, gathering the ball after subbing off the bench and charging down the flank and firing home to cut the deficit to 5-2. The Terps would net the next two, but Princeton would answer with two of their own before the halftime break.
Coulter Mackesy scored with 5:05 remaining in the half, netting a goal similar to Ronda's as he charged down the right side of the attacking third and ripped a shot inside the post. Chris Brown would score from in close range with 1:42 left in the half off a Sam English pass as the Tigers converted on an extra-man opportunity.
Brown's goal came during a three-minute EMO for the Tigers, but it was the only goal Princeton could muster on that man-advantage or a subsequent one – or an ensuing one immediately after at the start of the third quarter. Instead of continuing to climb closer, Princeton saw its deficit grow as Maryland scored the first four goals of the third quarter to build an 11-4 lead before Alex Slusher scored with 5:38 remaining in the third.
The Tigers netted the next two goals to close the third quarter, with Alex Slusher and Alexander Vardaro scoring 1:36 apart to bring Princeton within five after three periods.
After Logan Wisknauskas scored for Maryland midway through the fourth quarter, Jamie Atkinson scored for the Tigers with 5:41 to play. Jake Stevens drew a double team from the Maryland defense, and slipped a pass through the scrum to Atkinson who fired home from space to make it 12-7.
