Women’s Volleyball Opens Ivy Play With 3-0 Triumph Over Penn

PRINCETON, N.J. – The Princeton University women's volleyball team opened Ivy League play Friday night inside Dillon Gymnasium, triumphing 3-0 (25-21, 25-12, 25-13) over the University of Pennsylvania.
Hitting .411 as a team, the Tigers were led by senior Melina Mahood who had a match-high 11 kills. Senior Lindsey Kelly led the match in assists with 42, and freshman Lucia Scalamandre in blocks with five. Senior Cameron Dames and freshman Valerie Nutakor tied for the match-high in digs, with eight.
The opening set began as a back-and-forth battle, until a kill by Mahood followed by a freshman Ella Bunde service ace gave the Tigers a 10-7 lead. A kill by sophomore Mariah Haislip led off a 3-0 run, putting Princeton in front 15-10, and the tigers would use another 3-0 run to take a six-point advantage, 21-15. The Tigers withheld a late 3-0 Quaker run to prevail in the set, 25-21.
While Penn took an early 5-4 lead in the second set, a Nutakor kill sparked 4-0 run that saw Prince surge ahead, 8-5. With the Tigers in front 13-9, a Haislip kill led off a 6-0 run, putting Princeton in front 18-9. The Tigers would close the set out with a 3-0 run, prevailing 25-12 with set point coming on a double block by senior Avery Luoma and Haislip.
The third set began evenly-matched, but a Quaker service error followed by a Nutakor kill saw the Tigers take a 7-4 lead. Two-straight Luoma kills extended Princeton's advantage to five at 13-8, then with the Tigers up 17-12 a kill by Haislip sparked a 5-0 run, giving the Tigers a 22-12 lead. Princeton closed the set out on a 3-0 run, winning with a final score of 25-13 and earning the sweep over the Quakers.
