Tigers Put The Happy In "Happy Valley" With 2-1 Win At Penn State
September 09, 2022 | Men's Soccer
Ryan Clare netted the winner in the 69th minute, pouncing on the rebound of a Daniel Diaz Bonilla shot and giving Princeton a 2-1 lead. Diaz Bonilla had taken a through ball from Malik Pinto and sent a shot off both the crossbar and the far post before Clare beat the keeper to the loose ball and sent it into the open net.
The Tigers would defend the rest of the match, Penn State going offside late in the match to negate a potential tying goal and the Tigers staving off a Nittany Lion corner kick in the final minute of the match.
Â
The win is the first of the season for the Tigers who are now 1-1-1. Penn State falls to 2-2-1.
Â
The Clare goal was the only goal awarded to an attacking player in the match as each side knocked a ball into its own net in the first half for a pair of own goals and a 1-1 score at the break.
Â
Mateo Godoy served up a free kick from just outside the box in the 42nd minute, and the ensuing chaos in the box saw the ball clang in off a sliding Penn State defender for a 1-0 Princeton lead.
Â
Â
The Nittany Lions pushed the issue 15 minutes into the second half, but Peter Mangione's header was just off target and the match remained tied, 1-1. In the 65th minute, a free kick from Seth Kuhn just outside the penalty area sailed perilously high, just grazing the crossbar on its way out of play.
Â
Daniel Diaz Bonilla gave Princeton its first dangerous chance of the half in the 67th minute, but his shot from distance was denied.
Â
The Tigers return to action on September 17 with a road match at Fairfield. Kickoff with the Stags is set for 7 p.m.

Just over three minutes later, it was Penn State's turn to capitalize on a service as a corner kick found the foot of Alex Stevenson whose shot was headed down and in by a Princeton defender to tie the match with just 0:16 left in the first half.Peep The Goal!
