Men’s Volleyball Defeats Concordia 3-1 to Close Out California Trip

Irvine, CA – The Princeton University men's volleyball team claimed a 3-1 (25-23, 28-26, 19-25, 25-17) victory over the Concordia Golden Eagles, gaining their second win of the 2023 season. Princeton impressed in Wednesday night's match, with several Tigers' contributing major plays to the team victory.
Ben Harrington led the way for Princeton, leading the match in kills with a season high 21 on a .515 hitting percentage, and also adding a match-high four service aces. Henry Wedbush led the match in assists with 36 as well as digs, with 6. Ryan Vena was a force defensively, finishing the night with three blocks.
The Tigers opened up the match with a strong start against Concordia. The first set featured a four point, Princeton scoring streak with two service aces from Ben Harrington, to put the Tigers ahead 5-2. Concordia battled back, but Princeton was able to take on the Golden Eagles point-by-point, tying things up at 11-11. Kills from Alexander Mrkalj, James Hartley, and Nyherowo Omene contributed to the Princeton offense leading 14-16.
With the set tied yet again at 23-23, another kill from Omene was enough to spark a 3 point run to help the Tigers take set one, 23-25.
Concordia took an early lead in the second set 5-1, but the Tigers fought back, tying things up at 6-6. The Princeton comeback streak featured a clutch ace from Brady Wedbush.
Ryan Vena entered the match on fire, with a kill to tie the match 7-7. Similar to the back and forth nature of set one, the tigers continued to battle against the Golden Eagles tied at 25-25.
The stamina of the Princeton team was on full display, with Vena and Hartley showing up big for the Tigers, contributing kills that helped Princeton to win the set 28-26.
Set three featured the only Golden Eagle win of the night. When Concordia managed to take an early seven point lead, making the score 2-9, Princeton struggled to catch up. The Tiger offense did not back down, with Ben Harrington totaling 6 kills within the set, and the Tigers decreasing the point deficit by three, at 15-18. The early Concordia streak was an obstacle that Princeton could not overcome, with the Tigers losing set three, 19-25.
With a 2-1 lead, Princeton was determined to take care of business in the fourth set and close out the team's California trip with a win. The usual suspects of Harrington, Omene, and Hartley all contributed kills to put the Tigers up early in set four, 8-5. A service ace from both Henry Wedbush and Brady Wedbush helped the Tigers to take the lead 15-10.
Followed by a four point scoring run and a match point resulting in a service error from Concordia, Princeton was able to take care of business in Irvine, winning the set 25-17 and the match, 3-1
