Men's Hockey Draws With Sacred Heart, 2-2
December 09, 2023 | Men's Ice Hockey
A tightly-played affair went the distance as Princeton and Sacred Heart played to a 2-2 tie at Hobey Baker Rink. The Tigers (5-5-2, 4-3-1-1 ECAC) received goals from Noah de la Durantaye and Jack Cronin but were unable to capitalize on a dominant overtime period as the Pioneers escaped with the tie.
For Cronin, the goal gives him one score in each of his last three games. He has four total points over his last three games (3g, 1a).
Arthur Smith came on in relief after Ethan Pearson suffered an injury in the second period and stopped all eight shots he faced to secure the tie. For the weekend, he stopped 29-of-29 shots and posted a 1-0-1 record against the Pioneers.
The Tigers were 2-for-2 on the penalty kill, finishing the weekend a perfect 7-for-7 on the kill against the nation's No. 4-ranked power play. On the flip side, Sacred Heart killed all three Princeton power plays in the game – including a five-minute major in the second period.
After the 65:00 played to a tie, the two teams engaged in an exhibition shootout which SHU "won", 2-1.
Daniel Ebrahim gained a step down the left wing and his wrister snuck through the five-hole for a 1-0 Sacred Heart lead with 7:32 left in the first period. Rylee Hlusiak forced a Princeton turnover and turned towards the Princeton end in transition, beating the defense with a stretch pass to Ebrahim that provided enough space for the Pioneer to take his shot and score.
Noah de la Durantaye netted the equalizer for the Tigers 2:38 into the second period, scoring his first of the season to cap an odd-man rush from the Tigers that saw Adam Robbins feed up to Ian Murphy who dropped to a charging de la Durantaye who then paused to evade a defender before firing inside the near post.
Jack Cronin scored 2:41 into the third period to tie the game at 2-2, finishing a full-ice rush off a faceoff win in the defensive zone that saw Kai Daniells knock a loose puck forward for David Jacobs to carry across the blue line before he funneled a pass through the lone Pioneer defenseman for Cronin to quickly finish to tie the game.
The Tigers pushed for the winner, including a 5-1 edge in shots on goal in overtime. However, unlike the previous three home games where the Tigers played overtime there was not a game-winner from Princeton as Cullen de Young stopped all five Princeton shots.
The Tigers are off for exams the next two weeks, returning to action on December 30 against Harvard at Hobey Baker Rink at 4 p.m.
