Men's Hockey Eliminated From ECAC Playoffs
March 11, 2023 | Men's Ice Hockey
A fast start from the home team was too much for Princeton to overcome in a 6-1 loss to No. 2 seed – and national No. 6 – Harvard at the Bright-Landry Center.
As a result, Princeton's 2022-23 season comes to a close. During the campaign, the Tigers posted 13 wins -- their most since the 2017-18 season. Picked to finish preseason No. 12 in the ECAC, the Tigers were as high as fourth in the standings at one point in the season and finished in a tie for the No. 7 spot before winning a First Round playoff game at Union to reach the Quarterfinals.
Matt Hayami had Princeton's goal, scoring off an assist from Alex Konovalov.
Princeton had a slight edge in shots on goal, sendiong 35 towards Harvard's goal while the Crimson took 33.
Harvard scored twice in the first period, building a 2-0 lead after twenty minutes for the second game in a row.
Ryan Drkulic struck first, scoring 2:13 into the game with assists to Baker Shore and Marek Hejduk.
Alex Laferriere extended the lead with 3:11 left in the period, slipping free in the slot and roofing a wrister under the crossbar.
The Tigers had a chance to work their way back into the game via a five-minute power play after Austin Wong was called for boarding with 2:22 left in the first period. The extended man-advantage went for not, though, as the Tigers were unable to break through.
The Crimson would score twice in 2:00 to widen their lead to 4-0. First, a point shot from Ryan Siedem was deflected home by a Harvard forward with 5:13 to play. Laferriere would follow with his second of the game minutes later.
The Tigers had a second opportunity on an extended power play at the start of the third period when Siedem was called for a facemasking major penalty at the end of the second.
The Tigers had multiple chances from in tight, but offerings from Ian Murphy and Jack Cronin were turned aside by Mitchell Gibson.
Midway through the third period, with Princeton on a power-play and the goalie pulled, Harvard scored a long-range empty netter while shorthanded via Baker Shore.
