Hamza Leads Foil Standings as Tigers Stand Third After First Day at NCAAs

Mohamed Hamza is atop the foil standings after the first day at the NCAA Championships at Duke, winning 13 of his 15 bouts.

As a team, Princeton stands third with 47 wins, 15 back of leader Notre Dame's 62 with Columbia second at 52.

Hamza has eight bouts to go to determine his place within the standings, and the top four finishers will advance to the semifinals in the chase for the NCAA individual title. Hamza, a senior, has competed in two previous NCAA Championships, finishing sixth in 2019 and making the semifinals last year to go 2 for 2 in earning All-America honors.

Three more Tigers ended Thursday in the top-12 position that would earn All-America recognition once Friday's competition is over, with sabers Ronald Anglade and Matthew Limb standing fifth and 10th, and épée Tristan Szapary sixth. Foil Brandon Li is 19th and épée Ryan Lee is 21st.

Competition will resume at 9 a.m. Friday.
