No. 5 Princeton Falls To Georgetown 13-10
March 04, 2023 | Men's Lacrosse
The Georgetown men's lacrosse team was bound to turn things around, and you didn't want to be the team on the other side when it did. Unfortunately for Princeton, it was next on the Hoya schedule.
Â
Georgetown was a preseason top two team. It was also a team that lost its first three games — something that wasn't going to last, and didn't, as the Hoyas knocked off fifth-ranked Princeton 13-10 on Sherrerd Field Saturday afternoon.
Â
Princeton was led by five goals and an assist from Coulter Mackesy and three goals, one assist and five ground balls from Jake Stevens. The Tigers were done in by a tough third quarter, when Georgetown pushed a 7-6 halftime advantage to 12-6 with five minutes left in the quarter.
Â
Goalie Griffen Rakower and Michael Gianforcaro combined for 17 saves for the Tigers. Georgetown's Michael Scharfenberger made 15 saves in his first start of the season.
Â
Princeton answered Georgetown's first goal of the day with goals from Mackesy and Tommy Barnds to go up 2-1. After a three-goal Hoya run, Mackesy and Stevens scored to tie it at 4-4.
Â
The key moment of the game came early in the second quarter, when Princeton first killed off a 30-second penalty and then, with a flag down, appeared to tie things when Alex Slusher beat Scharfenberger. Instead, Slusher was ruled to have been in the crease, wiping out the score, and Georgetown killed off a one-minute penalty. The Hoyas would score the next two before Mackesy and Stevens again scored, making it a one-goal game at the break.
Â
Princeton travels to Rutgers next Saturday for the 100th meeting between the teams.
