Mackesy, Stevens Make Program History Against Georgetown
March 06, 2023 | Men's Lacrosse
Coulter Mackesy has accomplished something that hasn't been done with the Princeton men's lacrosse program since 1982. Jake Stevens accomplished something that hasn't been done before period.
Mackey scored five times against Georgetown Saturday, running his four-game total to 15 goals. When was the last time a Princeton player had at least 15 goals in the team's first four games? Well, it wasn't this century. It wasn't in the 1990s either.
In fact, you have to go all the way back to 1982 — 41 years ago — to find a player who matched Mackesy's numbers. Back in 1982, Gerry Ronan also had 15 goals in the first four games of the season.
As for Stevens, with his numbers against Georgetown, he became the first Princeton player ever to have a game with at least three goals, five ground balls and three caused turnovers (this stat only dates to 2010). He also added an assist against the Hoyas.
While Stevens is the first to hit those numbers, it's worth mentioning that Zach Currier, who like Stevens played at Culver Military before Princeton, had six games in his career where he had at least three caused turnovers and five ground balls along with either two goals or three points. In fact, Currier once had a game of two goals, 16 ground balls and four caused turnovers.
Princeton is ranked 13th this week in the USILA coaches' poll and 14th in the Inside Lacrosse media poll. Next up for the Tigers is a trip to Rutgers (sixth by the coaches, seven by the media) Saturday at 1 in the 100th meeting for the Meistrell Cup.
