Coulter Mackesy Named One Of 25 Nominees For The Tewaaraton Award
April 20, 2023 | Men's Lacrosse
Coulter Mackesy hasn't needed long to make a national name for himself in Division I men's lacrosse.
The Princeton attackman has been named as one of only two sophomores among the final 25 nominees for the Tewaaraton Award, given to the outstanding player in college lacrosse. The list of 25 was announced Thursday afternoon by the Tewaaraton Foundation, who will announce the five finalists on May 11.
Mackesy and Notre Dame's Chris Kavanagh are the only two sophomores in the group. There are also five total Ivy League players, with Mackesy, Penn's Sam Handley, Yale's Matt Brandau and Cornell's C.J. Kirst and Gavin Adler.
Mackesy has had a huge sophomore year for Princeton. As the only attackman to start all 10 games, Mackesy has team bests with 37 goals and 55 points, and his per game averages ranks third (points) and fifth (goals) in Division I. He has at least one goal in 17 straight games, including at least three in nine of 10 games this season. Mackesy enters Saturday's game against Harvard (1, Sherrerd Field) with 98 career points, leaving him two away from becoming the 40th player in program history to reach 100 points — and only the fifth Princeton sophomore to do so, along with Michael Sowers, Kevin Lowe, Ryan Boyle and Jesse Hubbard.
