Mackesy Breaks Single-Season Goals Record, Among Other Achievements
May 15, 2023 | Men's Lacrosse
Coulter Mackesy's sophomore season can best be described as "record-setting."
For starters, Mackesy broke the Princeton men's lacrosse single-season goals record with 55, one better than Gavin McBride's 54 in 2017. Mackesy, McBride and Jesse Hubbard, who had 53 in 1997, are the only Princeton players who have scored at least 50 in a season.
Mackesy went into Princeton's NCAA tournament game at Penn State with 49 goals before putting up six against the Nittany Lions. Those six tied Hubbard, who did it twice, and Chris Massey for the most goals in an NCAA tournament game by a Tiger.
In addition to his 55 goals, Mackesy also tied Alexander Vardaro for the team lead with 23 points, giving him 78 points for the year. Only Michael Sowers, who had seasons of 90, 83 and 82, has ever had more points in a year than Mackesy, who is now tied for fourth on Princeton's single-season list with Mike MacDonald, who had 78 as well in 2015.
Mackesy also became the first Princeton player ever with at least 50 goals and 20 assists. He also set the program record with 11 games in a season of three or more goals. His eight-goal, two-assist outings against both Yale (regular season) and Harvard make him the only player in Princeton history ever with multiple games of eight or more goals in a career and one of two players with at least 10 points in multiple games, along with Sowers, who did so five times in his career.
Mackesy was a unanimous first-team All-Ivy League selection and a second-team USA Lacrosse Magazine All-American.
