Women's Lacrosse Edged In Ivy Semis By Yale, 11-10
May 05, 2023 | Women's Lacrosse
A four-goal run from Yale in the fourth quarter spoiled a Princeton lead as the Bulldogs snuck away with an 11-10 win in the Ivy League Tournament semifinals at Penn Park in Philadelphia.
Â
The Tigers led, 10-7, with 1:34 left in the third quarter and then were unable to find the back of the net the rest of the way as the Bulldogs staged their comeback.
Â
Bella Savino had three goals in the fourth quarter – including the game-winner with 4:13 to play.
Â
The Tigers had four shots in the fourth quarter – hitting the post once, having one saved and sending the other two wide – before the Bulldogs tied the game up late.
Â
Grace Tauckus and Sophie Whiteway each had hat tricks for the Tigers, while Haven Dora and Jami MacDonald each had three-point games with a goal and two assists.
Â
Amelia Hughes made 11 saves in goal, adding three ground balls. Sammy Filippi also had three ground balls.
Â
Savino and Sky Carrasquillo each had four goals for the Bulldogs, Carrasquillo adding seven draw controls.
Â
Princeton scored the first three goals of the game, building a 3-0 lead 6:20 into the game.
Â
Ball movement was the key to the opening spurt as all three Princeton goals were assisted. Sophie Whiteway opened the scoring, taking a Jami MacDonald pass and finishing 2:06 into the game.
Â
Up next was Kate Mulham on the run off an assist from Kari Buonanno 2:31 later to make it a 2-0 game.
Â
MacDonald netted the next goal, taking a no-look, over-the-shoulder pass from McKenzie Blake at the near post and tucking it home for a 3-0 lead.
Â
The Bulldogs finally got on the board 7:02 into the game, and scored twice to cut the Tigers' lead to a goal with 6:30 left in the opening period. It appeared the game would head to the second quarter that way, but Grace Tauckus stepped into a free position and scored with 0:16 left in the first frame.
Â
Both sides traded goals in the second period, each scoring twice. Samantha DeVito uncorked a rocket of a free position with 9:49 left in the half to give the Tigers a 5-3 lead. After Bella Saviano scored for Yale with 9:12 remaining in the second quarter, neither team scored for 9:04 of play until Tauckus again connected just before the end of a period with an extra-player goal with 0:08 left in the half.
Â
Each team had control of a portion of the third quarter, but it was Princeton who had the better of it late to take a 10-7 lead through 45:00 of play.
Â
Yale scored three of the first four goals in the third period to pull even at 7-7, but that tie lasted all of 0:38 before Sophie Whiteway took a Jami MacDonald pass and scored to regain the lead for the Tigers.
Â
Whiteway added another 2:04 later off a feed from Haven Dora before Dora then called her own number for a free position goal with 1:34 left in the third to give Princeton a 10-7 lead.
Â
That would be the last goal the Tigers would score as the Bulldogs rattled off four unanswered goals in the final period, taking their first lead of the game when Bella Savino scored with 4:13 to play.
Â
After that, Yale secured the ensuing draw control and maintained possession the rest of the way – aided by a pair of Princeton yellow cards in the final two minutes which put the Tigers at a further disadvantage while chasing the ball.
