No. 1 Men's Lightweight Rowing Heads To IRA At Mercer Lake
June 01, 2023 | Men's Rowing - Lightweight
PRINCETON – The No. 1 Men's Lightweight Rowing Team will participate in the IRA Championships this weekend on Mercer Lake.
Princeton's 1V went 11-1 in the regular season with its only loss coming at Cornell while the 2V was undefeated at 10-0. Those two boats won gold at the Eastern Sprints, good enough to earn the Jope Cup for highest combined point total among teams at the sprints. It was the Tigers' first Jope Cup since 2010 and 16th time overall. If that wasn't enough fun, with the win in the 1V, the Tigers claimed the Ivy League championship as the highest-finishing Ivy school at Sprints.
Princeton has done historically very well at the IRA Championships with the 1V medaling in the four of the last six races. The Tigers have not finished lower than seventh since 2007. Princeton won the national crown, awarded to the winner of the 1V race with the 1922 Trophy five times (1994, 1996, 1998, 2009, 2010) and three more championships (1986, 1988,1989) before nationals were moved to IRAs.
The 2V will race for lanes on Friday at 8 a.m., while the varsity eight goes off at 8:50 a.m. and the four's time trial begins at 11:30 a.m. The grand final for the four is on Saturday at 11:30 a.m. The finals for the 1V (10:20 a.m.) and 2V (9:30 a.m.) are Sunday.
