Women's Volleyball Falls Just Short at Temple, 3-2

PRINCETON, N.J. – The Princeton University women's volleyball team showed resilience to overcome a two-set deficit and send it to five Wednesday night against Temple, but fell 3-2 (25-23, 25-23, 14-25, 22-25, 15-9) inside McGonigle Hall.
Sophomore Lucia Scalamandre hit .548, leading the match in kills with a career-high 19 and adding a match-high six blocks along with six digs. Freshman Sydney Draper recorded a double-double, handing out a match-high 55 assists and adding 12 digs. Freshman Sydney Bold led the Tigers in digs with 21 Senior Maya Satchell also had a double-double, tallying 15 kills and 18 digs, setting career-highs in both categories. Sophomore Ella Bunde also tied her career-high in digs with 12.
The Owls raced out to a 9-5 lead in the first set, but a Scalamandre kill ignited a 4-0 run that saw the Tigers battle back to take a 13-12 lead following a solo block by Scalamandre. Shortly after, a 4-0 Temple run saw the Owls take a 19-16 lead. A kill by sophomore Valerie Nutakor followed by a Temple attacking error helped Princeton chip away at the lead before a Satchell kill tied it at 21-21. A kill by junior Shelby Fulton tied it again, 23-23, but the Owls would edge the Tigers in the first set, 25-23.
A kill by Scalamandre early in the second set sparked a 3-0 run that saw the Tigers jump out to a 7-4 lead. Princeton would soon extend its advantage to 11-7 following a 3-0 run, this time sparked by a kill by junior Shelby Fulton. Another Scalamandre kill gave the Tigers a 16-11 lead, but the Owls bounced back with a 4-0 run to make it 16-15. Nutakor responded with four-consecutive kills to put Princeton up 20-15, but a 7-1 run by the Owls saw Temple take a 22-21 lead then go on to prevail in the set, 25-23.
Temple took a 10-7 lead to open the third set, but Princeton showed its resilience and used a 10-0 run to surge ahead, 17-11, after a kill by Satchell. The Tigers' dominant 10-0 run included a pair of Scalamandre blocks, a pair of Bold service aces, kills by Fulton, Satchell and Nutakor along with two Owl attacking errors. Princeton would close the set out on a 7-0 run, with set point coming courtesy of a service ace by freshman Erin McNair as the Tigers triumphed 25-14.

Another kill by Satchell saw Princeton extend its lead to 19-16; the Tigers would hold on to prevail in the set, 25-22, levelling the match 2-2 and sending it to a fifth set.
The fifth set saw the Owls jump out to a 3-0 lead, but consecutive Scalamandre kills knotted the score at 4-4. Temple would then take an 8-6 lead, but a Fulton kill followed by an Owl attacking error saw the Tigers make it a one-point contest at 10-9. It was Temple who rallied late, taking the fifth set 15-10 and the match 3-2.

The Tigers take on Rutgers (7-1) on Sept. 16 at 7 p.m. in New Brunswick, New Jersey, to wrap up non-conference play.
