Overtime Thriller Sends Princeton to the Ivy Championship as Tigers Defeat Cornell 3-2
November 15, 2024 | Men's Soccer
PHILADELPHIA, PA. – The Princeton men's soccer team came back from a 2-0 deficit to win the Ivy League semifinal against no. 2 seed Cornell on Friday night in Philadelphia, 3-2 in double overtime. With the win, Princeton moves onto the Ivy League Championship game on Sunday to face no. 1 seed Penn.
Daniel Ittycheria earned a brace, scoring the first goal and the game-winner for the Tigers, while Nico Nee scored the equalizer in the 83rd minute to send the game into overtime.
"I thought when we fell down 2-0 that it would take an incredible effort to get us back in the game and over the top to keep our season going, and that's exactly what we got. The guys responded and never stopped believing; they kept fighting and putting plays together and scored a couple of really good goals. We're really proud of their effort tonight." - Head Coach Jim Barlow
HOW IT HAPPENED
Cornell was first to strike with a goal by Alex Harris in the 15th minute. Just three minutes later, the Big Red would add another with a goal from Danny Lokko, putting the Tigers down 2-0 in the first 20 minutes of the game.
That 2-0 lead would be short lived, however, as Jack Jasinski would send a curling ball off a corner and into the box, where Ittycheria headed it in to get one back for the Tigers.
Roka Tsunehara and Giuliano Fravolini Whitchurch each went on to register a shot on goal, forcing saves by the Big Red keeper Ryan Friedberg. Cornell would also register one more shot, which was blocked, before the game went into halftime with a score of 2-1 Cornell.
Coming out of the half, Cornell and Princeton each fought intensely for the next goal in an end to end battle.
The Tigers registered five shots, forcing three saves by Friedberg. Meanwhile, the Princeton defense was able to deal with all four of Cornell's shots, with Andrew Samuels recording one save in the second half.
As the clock began to tick down, with only seven minutes remaining in the match, Jasinski again sent the ball into the box from about 30 yards out, connecting perfectly with Nee who was there to send the volley into the back of the net and tie the game at 2-2.
Despite continued pressure from Princeton, the 2-2 score stood at the end of regulation, sending the match into a golden-goal overtime.
The first overtime period saw a physical battle with only one shot being recorded in the 10 minutes, which was a blocked attempt by Ittycheria. With Tiger fans on the edge of their seats and anticipation on each bench, the game entered the second overtime period.
Princeton urgently fought for chances, continuing to create plays in and around the box. With just six minutes left until the game would go to a shootout, first-year defender Tsunehara sent a perfectly timed service into the box, where Ittycheria headed the ball into the net and past Friedberg to deliver the Tiger win.
After a thrilling game and a 3-2 victory, the Tigers placed their logo on the bracket for Sunday's championship, defeating a nationally-ranked team to advance to the final game in the program's first Ivy tournament berth.
