Princeton Falls To Yale In 146th Meeting

The 146th meeting of college football's second most-played rivalry looked like it was heading to the kind of dramatic finish that has defined so many afternoons at Yale Bowl between Princeton and Yale. Instead, the host Bulldogs took control in the third quarter to rally past Princeton 42-28.
It was a 21-21 game at the break and a 28-21 Princeton lead early in the third before Yale came back with the final three touchdowns on the day.
AJ Barber caught seven passes for 108 yards and a touchdown, giving him his third career 100-yard receiving day. Ethan Clark ran for 79 yards and two touchdowns, and John Volker had a 37-yard TD run of his own.
Blaine Hipa completed 23 of 39 passes for 267 yards. The teams combined for 827 yards of total offense.
Once again, Yale's Josh Pitzenberger had a big day against the Tigers, carrying 25 times for 159 yards and two touchdowns while adding another on a TD reception. The junior pushed his three-year totals against Princeton to 399 rushing yards and seven total touchdowns.
The Tigers forced a Yale turnover less than five minutes in when a hit from Nasir Hill knocked the ball loose from a Bulldog wide receiver after a long completion and Torian Roberts picked up the fumble and returned it to the Yale 47 for a quick change of possession in Princeton's favor.
Princeton cashed in on the turnover, Clark rushing for 40 yards on the ensuing drive and capping it with a 3-yard rush to give the Tigers a 7-0 lead.
Yale would counter on its next drive, needing nine plays to navigate 75 yards and score via a Pitsenberger 1-yard run with 3:17 left in the opening quarter.
It was Pitsenberger again for the Bulldogs to give them a 14- 7 lead with 6:40 remaining in the first half. This time, he scored through the air as he slipped out of the backfield and hauled in a 5-yard pass from Grant Jordan.
The pendulum swung back Princeton's way on their next drive as the Tigers needed just five plays to answer and tie the game at 14-14. A 33-yard Hipa-to-Barber connection opened the drive, and a 22-yarder from Hipa to Clark appeared to be enough for a score but Clark was ruled down at the 1. On the next play, Clark threaded his way through his offensive line for a 1-yard score.
Yale capitalized on a Princeton turnover with 1:50 left in the first half as the Bulldogs forced a fumble from Hipa at Princeton's 14 and Ejiroghene Egodogbare scooped it out of the air and tumbled in for a 21-14 lead.
Despite the unfortunate end to the preceding drive, Princeton settled in quickly and went down the field in nine plays to once again bring the game level, this time at 21-21. Hipa was 7-for-8 on the drive, finding four different receiver including AJ Barber for a 14-yard touchdown with 0:22 left in the half.
Out of halftime. Princeton went right back to work and needed just 1:44 to take a 28-21 lead. Volker had the big play, matriculating the final 37 yards practically untouched for a long-distance rushing touchdown.
