Smith's 37 Saves Secure Sweep Of No. 12 Ohio State
November 30, 2024 | Men's Ice Hockey
A valiant third period from Princeton secured a weekend sweep of No. 12 Ohio State as the Tigers scored three times in a wild final frame to score a 3-1 win over the Buckeyes.
Â
A scoreless game through two periods went wild in the final frame as the teams combined to score four goals – three of the sticks of Tiger players – and Princeton somehow navigated 11 minutes of penalties to stave off any semblance of an Ohio State comeback.
Â
Arthur Smith made a career-high 37 saves to record his second win of the weekend.
Â
Brendan Gorman had a chance to give the Tigers an early 1-0 lead when Jayden Sison sprung him on a breakaway just under 4:00 into the game, but Logan Terness thwarted the backhander and kept the game scoreless.
Â
After a relatively engaging but uneventful first two periods where each team took 18 shots on goal but were unable to find twine, things picked up in the third.
Â
David Ma needed just 0:13 to get the Tigers on the board in the third period, picking off a Buckeye clearing attempt just outside the top of the circle and snapping home his second goal of the season off the far post.
Â
With the Buckeyes on their heels, Princeton gave Ohio State a lifeline when Joshua Karnish was whistled for 7:00 of total penalties just seven seconds after Konovalov scored. Already on a delayed call for holding, Karnish was whistled for a five-minute major and game misconduct for a hit from behind.
Â
That meant the Tigers would face a 5:00 major and then a 2:00 minor back-to-back and gave the Buckeyes a serious shot at tying the game.
Â
Instead, it was the Tigers who struck first in the situation as Brendan Goman blocked a shot at the point and then broke in clean for a short-handed breakaway score with 8:20 remaining in the game to give Princeton a 3-0 lead.
Â
Princeton was again quickly sent to the PK when Ian Devlin was dinged for interference with 3:12 remaining in the game. Ohio State pulled its goalie, but Smith stood tall with seven saves on the ensuing PK to turn aside the Buckeyes one more time and secure the sweep.
Â
Princeton returns to ECAC play December 6-7, hosting Union and RPI at Baker Rink.

As the period closed in on the halfway mark, Alex Konovalov picked a memorable time for his first collegiate goal as the senior finished off a crisp passing sequence from linemates Drew Garzone to Jake Manfre and finally over to Konovalov on the right wing where he roofed what would be the eventual game-winning goal.Ma!
