November 08, 2024 | Wrestling
PRINCETON, N.J. – Blaine Bergey, Luke Stout and Ty Whalen have been named the captains of the Princeton University wrestling team for the 2024-25 season.
Seniors Bergey and Stout enter their second season as captains, while sophomore Whalen joins the leadership squad after being unanimously elected by the team.
"I am very excited to announce the leaders and captains of the program, Luke Stout, Blaine Bergey and the newest addition, Ty Whalen. Luke and Blaine have really grown into this leadership role, I feel like they are an extension of the coaching staff with the standard that they hold themselves and their teammates to. Ty was unanimously voted on by his team to join that role, he embodies all the values that we speak of from a culture perspective. I know these individuals will do whatever it takes to help us achieve our goals." - Head Coach Joe Dubuque
Whalen, the newest captain, is a 149 lb sophomore who has already been making noise on the mat. In the preseason polls, Whalen ranked 8th on Flowrestling, 9th on Intermat and 13th on The Open Mat. At the Princeton Open on November 3rd, Whalen claimed the 149 lb title, going 5-0 including two technical falls and a major decision on the day.
"I am very grateful to be named a captain of the Princeton Wrestling team," Whalen said, "I am looking forward to building on the momentum that we have as a program and I am excited for the team to put the hard work on display throughout the year. Whatever it takes!"
Senior Bergey enters his second year in leadership after going 13-14 last season, competing at the Princeton Open, Navy Classic, and all thirteen dual matches at 157 and 165 with a win against Rutgers's no. 25 Anthony White.
"Being a Princeton Wrestling captain is a recognition of work ethic and attitude on and off the mat as well as an extension of the legacy of the Princeton Family Wrestling (PFW) captains who came before me," Bergey said. "I am thankful to my coaches for placing me in a leadership position and I hope to instill the core values of Princeton wrestling in the athletes who come after me."
Fellow senior Stout was ranked in a number of preseason polls this year in the 197 lb class, including no. 14 by Flowrestling, no. 15 by The Open Mat and Amateur Wrestling News, and no. 18 by Intermat. The Pennsylvania native is a three time Second Team All-Ivy honoree and a three time NCAA qualifier. In 2023, Stout finished with a 21-7 record while taking sixth at the EIWA Championships.
"With this being my final season with the team, being named captain again this year means everything. Although the last three years have flown by, I've been fortunate enough to learn and observe from some great leaders within our team, and to continue on the tradition means a lot to me," Stout said. "I now can truly recognize the importance of a leadership position from where I stand today and notice how I can impact the guys on the team in the room. It serves as a reminder that I need to show up every day with the same tenacity that I came in here with as a freshman, and continue to be grateful for the opportunity to wrestle here, leading by example through both my actions and words."
Stout also noted that he looks forward to the dual season this year, and he is excited to see the constant work from everyone on the team - not just those in the lineup - add up to successes on the mat. He also is optimistic about the contributions that younger wrestlers will be able to make as the team pursues its goals.
"I hope to cherish every moment throughout the season as we face some tough opponents on our schedule," Stout said. "I know that we are going to leave it all out there on the mat this year, hopefully creating an exciting environment and attracting some new fans along the way."
The Tigers will take the mat again next Sunday, November 17 at the Jersey Jostle. Princeton will face LIU and NC State at the Poland Springs Arena in Toms River, N.J., with the meet beginning at 9 a.m.
